Post Meal Stomach Pain Complaint
Abdominal pain is one of the most common reasons for admission to the emergency room. The source may be simple and self-limiting, but it may also be life-threatening.
Our primary goal in the Emergency Department is to identify patients who have serious underlying causes and may need urgent intervention as soon as possible and to ensure that they receive appropriate treatment.
First of all, a good history should be taken from the patient, medication use, additional disease, type of pain and additional complaints should be examined. (Loss of appetite, nausea-vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, change in stool color)
The location and spread of the pain, how it starts and progresses should also be examined. Did it start suddenly? Did it wake you up from sleep? Does it continue continuously or intermittently? Is it increasing? Factors that increase and decrease must be addressed.
While its onset after eating a fatty meal gives us information in favor of gallbladder stones, if it occurs after a certain food, it may suggest Gastro Esophageal Reflux disease.
Likewise, Pancreatitis may also be considered in a patient whose pain decreases with bending forward and sitting. The severity and whether you have had similar pain before should be questioned.
ECG should be evaluated in patients with cardiac risk factors, the elderly, or those with pain in the epigastric region.
If the patient's pain worsens, new nausea-vomiting or fever develops, or persistent pain persists for 8-12 hours after hospitalization, the patient must be referred back to the hospital after being evaluated for abdominal pain.
