Lung Cancer Awareness Month
Lung cancer is one of the most common types of cancer. For this reason, November is the month of "Lung Cancer Awareness Month”, on November 17, “Lung Cancer Awareness Day” is accepted as.
Lung cancer is the most important cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. Every year, 1.8 million patients are diagnosed with lung cancer in the world and approximately 1.6 million deaths occur due to the disease every year.
Tobacco/cigarette use, the most important risk factor, causes 22 percent of cancer deaths and 71 percent of lung cancer deaths worldwide. Lung cancer % was directly related to smoking in 70 cases. Other common causes of cancer are exposure to environmental toxic substances (radon, asbestos, arsenic, etc.), genetic predisposition/family history, and lung diseases that cause scar tissue formation in the lung.
What are the symptoms?
- Cough that does not go away or gets worse
- Shortness of breath
- Coughing up blood or bloody phlegm
- chest pain
- Loss of appetite, weakness, fatigue and weight loss
- hoarseness
- Recurrent or persistent lung infections such as bronchitis or pneumonia
How to Make a Diagnosis?
A mass in the lung can be seen with a chest X-ray. In addition, computed tomography is taken and it is decided how to reach the audience with the three-dimensional image obtained. A biopsy can be taken from the patient under the guidance of tomography, or sometimes a biopsy can be taken by reaching the lungs with a thin flexible tube/device we call bronchoscopy. If deemed necessary, different imaging tests may be performed.
Treatment;
The treatment of each patient varies, and multiple factors such as the location and stage of the disease, the patient's age and other health problems are effective in the treatment decision. These treatments require a multidisciplinary study; It includes different options such as surgery, targeted treatments, radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
However, it should not be forgotten that;
Early diagnosis is very important for lung cancer. Early diagnosis of lung cancer increases the chances of success in treatment and reduces mortality rates. It is important for individuals to be sensitive to symptoms for early diagnosis and to consult a physician if some symptoms occur. However, it is much more important to stay away from tobacco and other carcinogenic substances that cause lung cancer.
Lung cancer is a preventable disease. The most important reason is tobacco and tobacco products!
Quit smoking, don't quit your life!
